SVA EXHIBITION

Curatorial Message

This 2023 Founders Week Edition of the SVA Faculty exhibition has taken on new dynamics to include practitioners from across the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Recognizing the interdisciplinarity of our ecosystem, we will continue to maintain inclusivity in this rich experience. Our practice-led approach to research through art-making demonstrates the intricacies of each artist’s visual language. As each artist allegorizes through the employ of varied media and modalities, the resulting exhibition is richly layered with strong undergirding themes of the self, the feminine, history, symbols of empire, the sacred, and lost heritage. Other expressive pieces birth during the height of the pandemic raises questions about the impact of the things we lost, and the question of what happens when we lose the language of self-trust. Our emotions explode or remain stifled, our sexuality and identities are explored or become a cautionary tale.  As the Curatorial team can attest, a group exhibition as formally and conceptually diverse as this presentation involves surmounting several challenges. We thank the curatorial team which was ably led by Ms. Yulanah Mullings, Stefan Clarke, Robert Ayre, Paula Daley, and Miriam Hinds Smith. As we continue to rise and respond to the challenges, we will persist to engage our students to aspire as we inspire, recover and rediscover together.
