Wednesday May 9, 2018: Kingston Jamaica. The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA) in collaboration with Jamaica Moves will celebrate ‘Global Move for Health Day’ on Thursday May 10, 2018 beginning at 6 p.m.
Global Move for Health Day aims to promote healthy living through physical activity and healthy eating. “This philosophy resonated with us at the College” shared Marcia Donaldson Thomas, Director of Human Resources who recently led the planning of the biennial Wellness Fair under the theme ‘Choose Life…Live Well’. EMCVPA Wellness Fair 2018 launched an initiative called ‘Strive for Five’ which charged employees to eat better, drink more water, move more, rest more and think better; and so Global Move for Health Day is a perfect partnership.
Move for Health Day is an international event created by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2003 to promote physical activity as being essential for health and well-being. Jamaica Moves aims to generate public awareness on the benefits of physical activity in the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). WHO reports list physical inactivity among the main risks contributing to global chronic disease morbidity and mortality, especially unhealthy diet. It also estimated that over 60% of adults are not active enough.
The College will host a dance experience where participants will be exposed to thirty minutes dance sessions in Ballroom Dance, Folk dance and a Dancehall. The sessions will be led by EMCVPAs’ School of Dance Faculty including Kerry-Ann Henry, Paul Newman both of NDTC and independent dance instructor Gauntlett Stewart. The sessions will be open to the public and are totally FREE!
The School of Dance at the Edna Manley College of The Visual and Performing Arts exposes students to the highest quality training with a focus on producing well-rounded artistes. Students are guided towards greater knowledge of their art through focus on the communicative, artistic, technical and physical aspects of dance.
