SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)
Duration: Four (4) years
This programme provides students with the technical knowledge and ability to develop their potential as practicing artists. It seeks to nurture the creativity and critical thinking skills of the artist through interdisciplinary study and applications of technology with traditional and contemporary practices.
Bachelor of Art Education (B.A.E.)
Duration: Four (4) years
This programme equips students with the critical thinking skills, technical knowledge and ability to transfer knowledge of visual art in a formal educational environment, enabling them to be agents of change in the local and international education systems.
Associate of Art (A.A.)
Duration: Two (2) years
The Associate of Arts Degree in Visual Arts prepares students for transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree programme. On completion, students would have fulfilled all specialization, general studies and adjunct credits for the first two years of the B.F.A. programme. It also prepares students not intending to pursue B.F.A. studies for careers in a broad range of disciplines in visual arts. The curriculum provides a strong foundation through intensive studio investigation supported by general studies and art history. Courses focus on the development of critical thinking skills, competencies in areas of specialization, and an understanding of the theoretical framework that underpins visual arts practice.

BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 Bachelor / Associate Degree

  • Minimum FIVE (5) CXC subjects with grades 1 to 3 (grade 3 after 1998) or minimum FIVE (5) G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with grades A to C., including English Language.
  • Be at least 17 years old at the time of admission.
  • English Language at the CXC/G.C.E. Level is compulsory for all applicants.
  • Visual Arts at the CXC/G.C.E. Level is advantageous to applicants for the School of Visual Arts.

 Certificate/Studio Certificate In Visual Arts

  • Minimum TWO (2) CXC subjects (grades 1 to 3; grade 3 after 1998) or TWO (2) G.C.E. ‘O’ Level (grades A to C) including English Language.
  • Be at least 17 years old at time of admission.
  • Previous (basic) training in visual arts.
  • English Language at the CXC/G.C.E. Level is compulsory for all applicants.
  • Visual Arts at the CXC/G.C.E. Level is advantageous to applicants for the School of Visual Arts.

Interview

All applicants are required to appear for an interview regarding their study objectives, commitment and financial preparedness for enrolment.

College English Test and IT Proficiency Questionnaire

All applicants are required to sit EMCVPA’s English Proficiency Test as well as complete an IT Proficiency Questionnaire. The College’s policies require that students must be able to understand rapid idiomatic English and to express themselves clearly in speech and writing as well as demonstrate competencies in computer technology. These tests are administered by the examination department of the College and attract a fee that is non-refundable.

Portfolio

Applicants to the School of Visual Arts are required to submit a portfolio of original work for evaluation. The portfolio should consist of not less than fifteen (15) pieces of recent artwork, i.e., drawings done from observation, including landscape, still life, self portrait or figure drawing. Three-dimensional work, sculpture and crafts may also be presented. Slides or photographs of artworks are accepted from overseas applicants.

 MATURE ENTRY ADMISSION

Applications from individuals with significant experience but less academic qualification in the field of art they wish to pursue, may be considered for mature entry admission. Prospective applicants— aged 25 or above— may enter the course with less academic qualifications provided they show aptitude for learning and have sufficient experience of working within their chosen field. Applicants’ life experiences are also taken into account.

Every application is considered on a case-by case basis. To be eligible for Mature Student Entry must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Should be 25 years of age or older.
  • Should have at least 5 years experience in teaching or practicing in the art form.
  • Attend a portfolio interview
  •  Demonstrate academic competence/readiness for the programme.
  • Demonstrate professional competence.
  • Attend an entry exam.
